SP Group: Your Guide to Setting Up Utilities for Your New Home

Whether you are an owner or a tenant, after moving into a new home, you will need to set up various utility services, such as water, electricity, and gas, to ensure normal usage.

Setting up utility services in Singapore is not difficult, but knowing the exact steps to take can save you time and effort, allowing you to focus on more important things.

Here is a simple step-by-step guide to get you started right away!

What to Know Before Setting Up Utility Services

In Singapore, you need to open a water and electricity account through SP Services. If you do not use LPG cylinder gas, you can set up your gas supply through City Energy by calling 1800 555 1661 after confirming your SP Services account has been successfully opened.

You must have a utility account before you can schedule an appointment to turn on your utilities.

For HDB resale flats and other residential properties, the account holder or a representative must be present during the turn-on appointment. This is to allow technicians to conduct safety checks before activation.

⚠️Please note that buyers of Build-To-Order (BTO) flats do not need to arrange a turn-on appointment for their homes, as the electricity and water supplies are already activated and ready for use!

If your property’s electricity is supplied by an electricity retailer instead of SP Group, please contact the individual retailer to find out the next steps required.

This infographic from SP Group provides a high-level overview of the process for setting up utility services in Singapore:

Not planning to use electricity services from SP Services? You still need to open an SP Utilities account first before registering with another retailer.

Now, let’s dive into the process of opening a utility account!

How to Open an SP Services Utility Account

You can open an SP Services utility account through the following methods:

  • SP Utilities App, available on the App Store and Google Play Store.
  • SP Utilities Portal (using MyInfo/MyInfo Biz).
  • SP Customer Service Centre.

Using MyInfo (SingPass) to open an SP Services account is usually the most convenient method, as you won’t have to submit an application form, Singapore National Registration Identity Card (NRIC), and a letter of authorization (for companies).

After opening your account, you will need to pay a security deposit.

How much is the security deposit?

The amount of security deposit you need to pay is shown below:

Singaporeans/Permanent Residents (PRs)/Companies
Property Type Deposit for GIRO Customers Deposit for Non-GIRO Customers
1- or 2-Room HDB Flat S$40 S$60
3-, 4- or 5-Room HDB Flat S$70 S$100
Executive Condominium / HUDC / Maisonette S$100 S$150
Condominium / Semi-Detached / Private Apartment S$150 S$250
Bungalow / Penthouse / Terrace S$250 S$400

Non-Singaporeans/Non-Permanent Residents
Property Type Deposit for GIRO Customers Deposit for Non-GIRO Customers
1- or 2-Room HDB Flat S$80 S$120
3-, 4- or 5-Room HDB Flat S$140 S$200
Executive Condominium / HUDC / Maisonette S$200 S$300
Condominium / Semi-Detached / Private Apartment S$300 S$500
Bungalow / Penthouse / Terrace S$500 S$800

After your lease ends or the house is sold, the security deposit can be used to pay your final utility bill. If there is a balance, it will be refunded to your GIRO account or mailed to you as a cheque within one month.

How do I pay my utility bills?

Here are several ways to pay your SP utility bills.

  • Credit Card: With a POSB Everyday Card, you can set up monthly recurring payments and receive up to 5% rebate on each payment.
  • GIRO: Print and mail the GIRO form.
  • SP app: On the app, you can use a variety of credit and debit cards to pay your bill.
  • Other electronic payment methods, such as AXS Machine and internet banking: Payment via internet banking is only available for DBS, UOB, and OCBC users. Other payment methods include SAM machines, AXS Stations, and ATMs (DBS, POSB, and OCBC).
  • SP Services center: If cash is your preferred payment method, head to a service center, as this is the only place that accepts cash. You can also pay using NETS, cheque, or credit card.
  • Singapore Post offices and 7-Eleven stores: Will accept cash, CashCard, or NETS payments.

How long does it take to activate utility services?

It takes approximately two weeks for activation.

If you apply to set up your utility services through the app, you will need to wait 7 working days for activation.

After submitting your application, you will receive an SMS confirmation on the next working day and an email at least two working days before your appointment. Once completed, you can reschedule your water and electricity turn-on appointment online within the available time slots.

What should I do if I want to switch to a different electricity retailer?

If you plan to switch to a different electricity retailer, do not close your SP Services account. This is because non-electricity charges such as water, gas, and refuse collection fees will still be billed to your SP account.

If your retailer bills you through SP Group, you will still receive one consolidated bill that includes both electricity and non-electricity charges.

If they do not bill you through SP Group, you will receive two separate bills. You will also need to arrange payment matters with your electricity retailer.

Can I transfer my SP Services account?

Moving to a new home? The thing is, each SP account is tied to a specific property, so you cannot transfer it to your new home. Instead, you must close your current account and open a new one for your new place.

Similarly, if you are renting out your property, you cannot transfer your account to your tenant. You must close your account, and your tenant must open a new one in their own name.

You can terminate your account through any of the following ways:
