Singapore Jumps 2, Now 3rd Least Corrupt Globally, Tops Asia-Pacific

This is the first time since 2010 that Singapore has topped the Asia-Pacific region in Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index.

According to the latest 2024 Corruption Perceptions Index released by the anti-corruption organization Transparency International, Singapore has been ranked as the third least corrupt country in the world, moving up two places from the previous year.

This is the first time since 2010 that Singapore has ranked first in the Asia-Pacific region on this index, surpassing New Zealand, which ranked fourth globally this year.

At the same time, Singapore also remains the only Asian country to have consistently ranked in the top ten globally since the index was first published in 1995.

Singapore was ranked third in 2018 and 2020, fourth in 2019 and 2021, and fifth in 2022 and 2023.

Top 10 Least Corrupt Countries in the World, Singapore Ranks Third

The index evaluates 180 countries and territories, ranking them based on the perceived levels of public sector corruption. Scores range from 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean). The 2024 index is a composite of 13 expert assessments and business surveys.

Singapore scored 84 points last year, one point more than in 2023 and 2022. Only four other countries in the top ten improved their scores, while five saw their rankings decline.

In a press release on Tuesday, February 11, the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) of Singapore stated: “Singapore’s reputation as one of the world’s least corrupt countries is hard-earned. Our people have consistently maintained a firm stance against corruption and will proactively report any wrongdoing to the authorities.”

The CPIB added: “Domestically, the number of corruption cases in the public sector has remained consistently low.”

CPIB noted that in the 2024 corruption study report by the Political and Economic Risk Consultancy (PERC), which covers 16 economies across Asia, the United States, and Australia, Singapore continued to rank first, a position it has held for 30 years.

In the World Justice Project’s 2024 Rule of Law Index, Singapore ranked third globally for “Absence of Corruption” and first in Asia.
