History of Singapore’s Postal Codes
Singapore’s first postal code system was introduced in the 1950s and consisted of only two digits. It divided the country into 28 postal districts, and most mail was sorted by hand.
In 1979, a four-digit system replaced the two-digit system, further dividing the 28 postal districts into 80 sectors. At that time, nearly half of Singapore’s mail was still being sorted manually. As mail volume was growing at a rate of 6% per year, an automated process was needed to handle the increasing volume.
In 1995, SingPost introduced the six-digit postal code system that we still use today. This new system reduced manual sorting by 17%. The previous four-digit system could only cover 10,000 delivery points, but the new six-digit system allows for 1 million specific numbers.

Current Postal Codes: How to Find My Postal Code?
The current six-digit code consists of two parts. The first two digits are the sector code, taken from the last two digits of the old four-digit code. The subsequent four digits represent a specific delivery point within that particular sector. Delivery points within a sector can be HDB flats, or private housing and commercial buildings. For HDB blocks, the delivery point will use the block number. Private residential and commercial buildings are assigned numbers based on the alphabetical order of the street they are on.
