Moving to Singapore: Is It Really Worth the Effort?

If you’re looking for a change of environment and want to experience life abroad, Singapore is an excellent choice.

Firstly, its geographical location is relatively close, making it quite convenient to travel back to your home country. If you’re coming from Shanghai, there are direct flights to Singapore, and you can be home in half a day. For someone living and working abroad for the first time, I believe this is quite important. You might need to go back to visit parents or other elders, or for special occasions involving relatives and friends. If you were in Europe or the United States, a trip back home would be a significant drain on your time and resources.

Secondly, there’s the matter of language and culture. No matter how good your English is, it doesn’t compare to the comfort of your native language. Moreover, language is a carrier of culture, and if it’s your first time working and living abroad, you might find it difficult to adjust due to cultural differences. Singapore has a large proportion of Chinese immigrants, not to mention the many Chinese professionals and students there, which will help you adapt to the environment more quickly.

Furthermore, even if you’re just there to experience life, Singapore will offer a completely different feel from your home country. Singapore’s reputation as a “Garden City” is well-deserved. The urban development is beautiful, with ample sunshine, good air quality, and an outstanding natural environment. You can enjoy the sun from your office, gaze out at forests, gardens, and the sea, and breathe fresh air. In a city like Shanghai, only the top elite can enjoy such an environment. Even just for health reasons, Singapore is an excellent and livable city.

Moreover, Singapore is extremely safe—the kind of place where you don’t even need to lock your doors when you go out. The government places a high emphasis on food safety; even when eating at a street stall, you never have to worry about “gutter oil.” The medical facilities are also excellent. Every community has many family clinics, and the medical standards in major hospitals are internationally leading (many people with complex medical conditions from other countries come here to see renowned doctors).

If you don’t have children yet but are planning to in the future, Singapore is a paradise for raising kids, with top-tier educational resources. Otherwise, there wouldn’t be so many mothers quitting their jobs in their home countries to accompany their children’s studies here.

From a career development perspective, as a major financial hub, the resources you can access here are on par with those in Shanghai. On a middle-class income, thanks to Singapore’s low personal income tax (around 11.5% – 15%), your take-home pay will be more than enough to live a very comfortable life in Singapore.

In short, if you have the opportunity, you should definitely give it a try and experience it for yourself. You might just fall in love with it!
